| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The actual definitions that got moved into the stdlib here are pretty few: * `clip()` * `cross()` * `dxx()`, `ddy()` etc. * `degrees()` * `distance()` * `dot()` * `faceforward()` The meat of the change is infrastructure changes required to support these new declarations * Generic versions of the standard operators (e.g., `operator+`) were added that are generic for a type `T` that implements the matching `__Builtin`-prefixed interface. An open question is whether we can now drop the non-generic versions in favor of just having these generic operators. * A `__BuiltinLogicalType` interface was added to capture the commonality between integers and `bool` * `__BuiltinArithmeticType` was extended so that implementations must support initialization from an `int` * `__BuiltinFloatingPointType` was extended to require an accessor that returns the value of pi for the given type, and the concrete floating-point types were extended to provide definitions of this value. * It turns out that our logic for checking if two functions have the same signature (and should thus count as redeclarations/redefinitions) wasn't taking generic constraints into account at all. That was fixed with a stopgap solution that checks if the generic constraints are pairwise identical, but I didn't implement the more "correct" fix that would require canonicalizing the constraints. * When doing overload resolution and considering potential callees, logic was added so that a non-generic candidate should always be selected over a generic one (generally the Right Thing to do), and also so that a generic candidate with fewer parameters will be selected over one with more (an approximation of the much more complicated rule we'd ideally have). * The formatting of declarations/overloads for "ambiguous overload" errors was fleshed out a bit to include more context (the "kind" of declaration where appropriate, the return type for function declarations) and to properly space thing when outputting specialization of operator overloads that end with `<` (so that we print `func < <int>(int, int)` instead of just `func <<int,int>(int,int)`). * The core lookup routines were heavily refactored and reorganized to try to make them bottleneck more effectively so that all paths handle all the nuances of inheritance, extensions, etc. * Because of the refactoring to lookup logic, the semantic checking logic related to checking if a type conforms to an interface was updated to be driven based on the `Type` that is supposed to be conforming, rather than a `DeclRef` to the type's declaration. This allows it to use the type-based lookup entry point and eliminates one special-case entry point for lookup. In addition to the various core changes, this change also refactors some of the existing stdlib code to favor writing more things in actual Slang syntax, and less in C++ code that uses `StringBuilder` to construct the Slang syntax. There is a lot more that could be done along those lines, but even pushing this far is showing that the current approach that `slang-generate` takes for how to separate meta-level C++ and Slang code isn't really ideal, so a revamp of the generator code is probably needed before I continue pushing. One surprising casualty of the refactoring of lookup is that we no longer have the `lookedUpDecls` field in `LookupResult`. That field probably didn't belong there anyway, but the role it served was important. The idea of `lookedUpDecls` was to avoid looking up in the same interface more than once in cases where a type might have a "diamond" inheritance pattern. Removing that field doesn't appear to affect correctness of any of our existing tests, but by adding a specific test for "diamond" inheritance I could see that the refactoring introduced a regression and made looking up a member inherited along multiple paths ambiguous. Rather than add back `lookedUpDecls` I went for a simpler (but arguably even hackier) solution where when ranking candidates from a `LookupResult` we check for identical `DeclRef`s and arbitrarily favor one over the other. One complication that arises here is that when comparing `DeclRef`s inherited along different paths they might have a `ThisTypeSubstitution` for the same type, but with different subtype witnesses (because different inheritance paths could lead to different transitive subtype witnesses: e.g., `A : B : D` and `A : C : D`).

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | * Add a warning on missing return, and initial SCCP pass The user-visible feature added here is a diagnostic for functions with non-`void` return type where control flow might fall off the end. This *sounds* like a trivial diagnostic to add as part of the front-end AST checking, but that can run afoul of really basic stuff like: ```hlsl int thisFunctionisOkay(int a) { while(true) { if(a > 10) return a; a = a*2 + 1; } // no return here! } ``` This function "obviously" doesn't need to have a `return` statement at the end there, but realizing this fact relies on the compiler to understand that the `while(true)` loop can't exit normally, and doesn't contain any `break` statement. One can write "obvious" examples that need more and more complex analysis to rule out. The answer Slang uses for stuff like this is to do the analysis at the IR level right after initial code generation (this would be before serialization, BTW, so that attached `IRHighLevelDeclDecoration`s can be used). When lowering the AST to the IR, we always emit a `missingReturn` instruction (a subtype of `IRUnreachable`) at the end of its body if it isn't already terminated. The IR analysis pass to detect missing `return` statements is then as simple as just walking through all the functions in the module and making sure they don't contain `missingReturn` instructions. For that simple pass to work, we first need to make some effort to remove dead blocks that control flow can never reach. This change adds a very basic initial implementation of Spare Conditional Constant Propagation (SCCP), which is a well-known SSA optimization that combines constant propagation over SSA form with dead code elimination over a CFG to achieve optimizations that are not possible with either optimization along. For the moment, we don't actually implement any constant *folding* as part of the SCCP pass, so we can eliminate the dead block in a case like the function above (and those in the test case added in this change), but will not catch things like a `while(0 < 1)` loop. Handling more "obvious" cases like that is left for future work. * fixup: warning on unreachable code * Handle case where user of an inst isn't in same function/code The code as assuming any instruction in the SSA work list has to come from the function/code being processed, but this misses the case where an instruction in a generic has a use inside the function that the generic produces. This change adds code to guard against that case.
* Add support for more RasterizerOrdered types (#628)Tim Foley2018-08-21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Fixes #627 The front-end has support for `RasterizerOrderedBuffer` and `RasterizerOrderedTexture*`, but left out support for: * `RasterizerOrderedByteAddressBuffer` * `RasterizerOrderedStructuredBuffer` [Nitpick: these tyeps are all amazingly annoying to type. It is easy to want to write `RasterOrdered` instead of the bulkier `RasterizerOrdered`, and almost everybody does in casual speech. There's already the issue of wanting to type `StructureBuffer` (a buffer of structures) instead of `StructuredBuffer` (a buffer that is... structured?). Then you have `ByteAddressBuffer` which is just adding to the confusion because it is nominally a "byte addressable" buffer (so that `ByteAddressedBuffer` would actually make sense), but then actually *isn't* byte addressable in practice.] There were a few `TODO` comments related to this already, and this change was mostly a matter of doing a find-in-files for `RWByteAddressBuffer` and `RWStructuredBuffer` and adding matching `RasterizerOrdered` cases. The test I added just checks that these types make it through the front-end, and doesn't do any actual confirmation that they work as intended. It is worth noting that the handling of ordering in GLSL/VK is different from in HLSL ("pixel shader interlock" instead of "rasterizer ordered views"), so coming up with a cross-compilation story would need to be a later step.
* Change uses of "spire" to "slang" (#461)Tim Foley2018-03-29
| | | | | | | | | | | Fixes #350 When the Slang project forked off from the Spire research effort, we renamed things as we went, but many cases seem to have slipped through the cracks. The two biggest diffs here are: - The `hello` example program was incorrectly talking about what was in the shader file (Slang no longer supports the "module" or "pipeline" constructs from Spire), and so it wasn't just a simple rename. - The files under `tests/bindings` were mistakenly using `__SPIRE__` as a preprocessor guard, which means that they weren't actually testing what they meant to. Luckily, it looks like the relevant functionality didn't regress while these tests were unintentionally deactivated.

The issue here was that the stdlib declarations for texture types were only including the `get` accessor for subscript operations, even if the texture was write-able. I've also included the fixes for other subscript accessors in the stdlib (notably that `OutputPatch<T>` is readable, but not writable, despite what the name seems to imply). * Fix infinite loop in semantic parsing (#424) The code for parsing semantics was looking for a fixed set of tokens to terminate a semantic list, rather than assuming that whenever you don't see a `:` ahead, you probably are done with semantics. This meant that you could get into an infinite loop just with simple mistakes like leaving out a `;`. This change fixes the parser to note infinite loop in this case, and adds a test case to verify the fix.
* Remove non-IR codegen paths (#398)Tim Foley2018-02-03
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The basic change is simple: remove support for all code generation paths other than the IR. There is a lot of vestigial code left, but the main logic in `ast-legalize.*` is gone. Doing this breaks a *lot* of tests, for various reasons: - We can no longer guarantee exactly matching DXBC or SPIR-V output after things pass through out IR - Many builtins don't have matching versions defined for GLSL output via IR (even when they had versions defined via the earlier approach that worked with the AST) - A lot of code creates intermediate values of opaque types in the IR, which turn into opaque-type temporaries that aren't allowed (this breaks many GLSL tests, but also some HLSL) I implemented some small fixes for issues that I could get working in the time I had, but most of the above are larger than made sense to fix in this commit. For now I'm disabling the tests that cause problems, but we will need to make a concerted effort to get things working on this new substrate if we are going to make good on our goals.

This leaves out a lot of major functionality: - There is no validation that a type provides all the members it is supposed to as part of fulfilling a claimed interface conformance - The lookup process needs to deal with inherited members at some point. - We can avoid this for now if we don't allow inheritance for concrete types - When it comes time to handle it, it *might* be possible to implement by considering an `InheritanceDecl` to be, conceptually, a member of the inherited type, with a `__transparent` modifier - The lookup rules member functions do *not* deal with a lot of stuff: - There is no `this` expression right now - The semantic checker does not rewrite `foo` to `this.foo`, so downstream stages aren't going to get things in a clean format - There is no handling of mutability currently - The right answer there is probably to make member functions on `struct` types non-mutating by default, and add a qualifier to opt in to mutability. I believe this is actually what the OOP syntax in HLSL did way back when. - There is no handling of `static` members, and thus no checking to make sure that non-static members aren't referenced in static functions - None of this affects down-stream code generation right now, so it probably won't actually produce anything valid. - This is where we start needing a suitable IR to use for lowering, to manage the complexity.
